Music In The Park Atlanta

Music In The Park Is Back For An Action Packed 7th Anniversary
Live Music & Art Festival in West End: Seven Stages of Free Music for the Community

Atlanta, GA: Sunday, April 23, Kebbi Williams presents the seventh year of his Music In The Park festival, which brings high caliber international talent to the residents of West End Atlanta. The MITP charity holds concerts, workshops, and educational events in West End throughout the year, culminating in the festival held each Spring.

“Music in the Park started as Kebbi Williams’ vision to display the diversity of the music scene in Atlanta that was underrepresented at the larger festivals in Atlanta. It has grown dramatically in the years since its inception into a festival that rivals the larger more well-funded festivals simply on the determination of Kebbi. He is a true leader in the community. He grew up in the West End, and ever since…he has been determined to have a place that emphasizes higher black arts because, quite frankly, in Atlanta there are dozens of places that emphasize art that appeals to our basic instincts. Music In The Park is a much-needed force in a neighborhood where the negative is the most publicized aspect.” -GRAMMY-nominated Jazz Trumpeter Russell Gunn.

MITP 2017 boasts seven stages of diverse talent from across the world. The event is held free of charge for the community, and with the participation of Atlanta Streets Alive, welcomes tens of thousands of cyclists and pedestrians from across Atlanta to enjoy the cultural vibrancy of West End: “The Best End.” MITP 2017 will host artists from Los Angeles, New York, and all parts in between, playing high caliber Jazz, Rock, RnB, Gospel, Flamenco, and more:

  • Highly acclaimed national acts as well as Atlanta legends will perform including: Butcher Brown, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Russell Gunn, and Dionne Farris
  • Ensembles from many area schools will perform, and the day will conclude with the MITP Youth Orchestra led by acclaimed maestro Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.
  • MITP 2017 welcomes its first international student, Nathan Blyden, who has received a scholarship from MITP to travel from the British Virgin Islands to study and perform at this year’s event.

About MITP: Music In The Park Atlanta was founded in 2010 by GRAMMY-winning Saxophonist Kebbi Williams to provide live music and diverse cultural experiences for residents in his community who had limited access to arts and cultural programming. Its Mission is to enlighten young performers and inspire vibrancy in communities through music and performing arts. The organization has proudly served 5100 students, engaged over 300 professional musicians and presented to 50,000+ people over the past 7 years. November 17, 2016 – Carlos Niño & Friends Live – Jazzhouse, Copenhagen, Denmark

Dexter Story plays percussion and synth with Carlos Niño & Friends ensemble at Copenhagen’s Jazzhouse on Thursday, November 17. This concert is the 4th in a series of shows supporting Niño’s Leaving Records release ‘Flutes, Echoes, It’s All Happening!’
maxresdefault-carlosFlutes, Echoes, It’s All Happening!, out now on Leaving/Stones Throw Records, is the fourth in an ongoing series of highly collaborative records by Carlos & Friends, and features Iasos, Madlib, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Kamasi Washington, Luis Pérez Ixoneztli, Dexter Story, and more. FEIAH was recorded in California – mostly in the greater Los Angeles area, with Iasos’ contributions coming from up North in Marin County. The material spans a number of years, through to March 2015.
The live incarnation, available for selective shows worldwide throughout 2016,  finds Carlos and his band of top-deck players tweaking and stretching the album compositions into fresh and glorious shapes, bursting with percussive colour and adaptable to high-grade theatre/jazz club environments as much as sweaty below-stairs beat sessions like LA’s seminal Low End Theory.

November 16, 2016 – Miguel Atwood-Ferguson: Suite for Ma Dukes + Carlos Niño and Friends, hosted by Gilles Peterson and Worldwide FM – EFG London Jazz Festival, Barbican, London, UK

Dexter Story plays percussion on Miguel Atwood-Ferguson’s “Suite for Ma Dukes” special reprise performance at the Barbican in London, England on Wednesday, November 16. Story will also perform with Carlos Niño & Friends opening set.
maf
screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-2-26-44-pmIn the 10th anniversary year of his untimely death, the music of American producer, DJ and Rapper J Dilla is reinvented as a radical take on contemporary chamber music by LA composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and producer Carlos Niño, backed by a 17-piece ensemble.

Cited as an influence on everyone from Mos Def to Flying Lotus, J Dilla’s compositions were years ahead of their time, bursting with unusual samples lifted from their original context and used to create entirely new music, with tricky rhythms and complex time signatures. Starting out as a studio project between Atwood-Ferguson and Niño, Suite for Ma Dukes rearranges Dilla’s music for live instruments, highlighting the breadth and depth of his compositions and showing just how versatile and intricate his music is even when translated into a wholly different musical language.

The perfect artist to tackle re-arranging J Dilla’s sprawling compositions, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson’s own CV covers an immense amount of musical experience – having worked with everyone from Outkast, Flying Lotus and Gilles Peterson to Sly Stone and Ray Charles, Wayne Shorter and Mulatu Astatke. Carlos Niño’s list of past collaborators covers similar ground – from A Tribe Called Quest to Afrika Bambaata, Gil Scott-Heron to Yusef Lateef.

Carlos Niño and his touring band will open the show, performing his swirling, mesmerising music which blurs the boundaries between classical and electronic worlds.

This eagerly-anticipated performance will be hosted by Gilles Peterson and Worldwide FM, Gilles’s new radio platform for the shape-shifting diversity of global music.

In 1996, J.ROCC released a mix tape called Syndromes. We didn’t come across it until 2001, but once we did it forever changed our lives. ArtDontSleep has been profoundly influenced by The Funky President of the Beat Junkie collective known as J.ROCC. Fast forward to 2013 and we thought it would be amazing to bring this mix tape experience to life by one of our favorite arranger composers today, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Miguel is one of the few people on planet Earth that can take a masterpiece like Syndromes, a piece that is non conventional in nature, and elevate it to the next level. Bear witness to one of the freshest concerts happening in all of 2013. Something so unique and original that we actually don’t have a precedent to show you as an example.
