The festival was an immediate success and has evolved to include live bands, poetry readings, chef demos, cultural entertainment and artists creating their work on-site. There’s also a photography exhibit, film screenings followed by Q&A’s and discussion panels on some of today’s hottest topics. The festival attracts approximately 150,000 people each year of all ages from Southern California and even other parts of the country.

November 2, 2014 – Ethio Cali Plays Tezeta – Blue Whale, Downtown Los Angeles, CA

Playing aux keys, guitar and arranging with Ethio Cali live at Blue Whale playing the nostalgic Tezeta music of Ethiopia on Sunday, November 2.
ethio cali_2_4X6-1
On Sunday, November 2nd, Ethio Cali will play two sets of music inspired by the concept of Tezeta.

Tezeta, an Amharic word from Ethiopia, loosely translates to nostalgia or longing. Tezeta is also one of the popular musical scales found in Ethiopia. Typically, Tezeta is associated with the memory of love lost, or the longing one feels when living far from home or their place of birth. It triggers emotions similar to that of saudade in Portuguese music, duende in flamenco, or the blues in America.

We hope you’ll join us for this special night of Tezeta at the blue whale.

Commentary: It is an honor to guest lecture with Todd and Ethio Cali at Cal Arts. I am looking forward to giving the students the inside track to Ethiopian scales and rhythms. My life is enriched by contributing to the exposure of this indigenous artform and I hope the students are ready to learn. The last time I was at Cal Arts, I played with Nedra Wheeler in a daze, and this time, I am planning to be more present and open. Hats off to Todd for setting this up.

Dereb The Ambassador:
Born in Ethiopia, Dereb grew up amongst a family of musicians, completely immersed in his home country’s rich melange of sounds, rhythms and musical styles. Dereb’s extraordinary vocal talent was recognised early on, with his first performances at the age of 4. With parent mentors by his side he went from strength to strength, adding a Masenqo, the single-stringed Ethiopian spike fiddle, to his repertoire by the age of 10. By his teens he was drawing crowds in the bars of Addis Ababa and around Ethiopia. In 2003 Dereb recorded his first solo album ‘Korkorow Yalew’ from which the hit single ‘Wollo’, reached number one on the Ethiopian charts. Dereb has since toured in America, England, Asia, New Zealand and Australia where he currently resides.
