News: Wejene Aola featuring Kamasi Washington Makes Top 10 – Vinyl Factory (thevinylfactory.com)

Dexter Story’s “Wejene Aola” 7″ release makes Vinyl Factory’s top 10 list for 2016.

4. Dexter Story ft. Kamasi Washington

Wejene Aola

An Ethio-funk bomb from Dexter Story, whose cover Tilahun Gessesse’s 1970 ‘Wejene Aola‘ is a homage to the oppressed Oromo people of southern Ethiopia and a testament to just how contemporary the country’s verdant ‘70s music scene still sounds. Taken from the brilliant Wondem album, Story is joined by spiritual jazz messenger Kamasi Washington, who blows a riot all over the new arrangement, his rasping, honking sax proving he can funk with the best of them. The b-side features the only track not to make the vinyl pressing of the LP, the dream-like ‘Eastern Prayer’, a spiritual antidote to the hedonism of ‘Wejene Aola’ carried by the meditational chants of vocalist Nia Andrews. A unique 7” from a label whose consistent reissue output is now being matched by some stellar new music.

Wondem Remixed is a humble compilation of reworkings by some of my colleagues in Los Angeles and the UK. I asked musicians who were already interested or involved in my musical explorations or who lived in a parallel universe. In other words, I didn’t force it on a who’s who of “remixers” and as a result this body of work has a more organic and personal sense about it. The collection starts with a masterful reimagining by Brainfeeder beat maestro Ras G who has played a couple of shows with us. He took elements from the entire Wondem record and created an Afrikan Space Program classic. Producer and drummer Te’Amir Sweeney plays with the Wondem band and brought his sonic expertise with a crazy ambient remix of Saba. Emerging production collective Stomach Club, whom I met through my good friend and co-producer Carlos Niño one night in Venice, went all-in and vibey on the Somalian-inspired tune Xamar. Carlos himself provided a spirited soundscape featuring tracks from the entire record. International DJ and KCRW.com favorite Jeremy Sole took Lalibela to a new place with his awesome musicality and sensitivity. Prolific trumpeter, Ethio Cali bandleader and arranger Todd Simon did a sublime dub version of one of the more popular tunes on the record Sidet Eskemeche. The compilation is also blessed by an Al Dobson Jr. appearance. He completely flipped Mowa and I am grateful to him. Last but not least are two exceptional perspectives on Merkato Star and Eastern Prayer by our London-based homie Kutmah.

I am very proud of this Wondem Remixed offering and hope you find some new inspiration for yourself in here.

FEATURE: Dexter Story — Artist You Should Know + Video Premiere for “Eastern Prayer” – KCRW Music Blog (Blogs.KCRW.com)

Featured on KCRW’s Music Blog “Artist You Should Know” on September 22 with the video premiere for “Eastern Prayer” directed by DJ multi-hyphenate Anthony Valadez. This is in support of the upcoming album release “Wondem” on Soundway Records. Click here.

Dexter Story is a unique figure in music today — He has played in different musical circles, booked for the legendary Temple Bar, worked as a product manager for Def Jam, and has now finally decided to work on his own songs and hit the record button.

His solo record is entitled, Wondem and is a collection of 12 songs that are inspired by the LA band Ethiocali, in which he plays the drums along side Kamasi Washington. Ethiocali performs the connecting sounds between Africa, California and everything else in between.

Dexter asked me to direct this video and the minute I hit play, I had all these ideas in my head in terms of a personal journey. “Eastern Prayer” just resonated with me — The chants, the steel drums and everything in between channeled Jamie XX and Fela Kuti in my head.

We shot this video in a couple of days around DTLA, LAX, Venice and Vasquez Rocks. I wanted to challenge myself and storytell through a camera instead of my turntables.

I hope people like it!

August 18, 2015 – “Lalibela” Single Premiere from Upcoming Wondem Album Release – WaxPoetics.com

Wondem is a unique collection of songs inspired by my passion for and immersion into African music and culture over my career” says Los Angeles musician Dexter Story about his new album, set for release on October 23 on Soundway Records. The multi-instrumentalist and producer combined his diverse background in soul, funk, jazz, and folk into his own unique and worldly voice, with influences from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya.

“This body of work came about as I began to compose and arrange for Todd Simon’s Ethio Cali, an emerging Ethio-jazz ensemble in Los Angeles. Wondem means brother in Amharic, and I felt a strong brotherly connection to Ethiopia during the process.”

The album was written and recorded in Story’s studio in downtown Los Angeles, and coproduced by the talented Carlos Niño. In addition, Story worked with an array of collaborators on the record, including Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Nia Andrews, Alsarah Elgada, and Yared Teshale.

In anticipation of the record, Wax Poetics is premiering the lead track, “Lalibela,” featuring Yared Teshale.

“The song ‘Lalibela’ was composed in tribute to the eleven great rock churches and the holy city in the north of Ethiopia. My mind couldn’t (and can’t) comprehend how they were excavated with precision like that, and I sing praises to them,” says Story. “Lalibela is an important pilgrimage center for Ethiopians, and I hope to visit there soon. The layout of the churches is said to be a replica of Jerusalem commissioned by Emperor Saint Gebre Lalibela in the twelth century. The track features vocalist Yared Teshale from Addis Ababa.”

Dexter Story is a man with many talents—he was the product manager for Snoop Dogg, Meshell Ndegeocello’s day-to-day representative, and later performed with artists such as Dwight Trible, Madlib, Quadron, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Kelis, Kamasi Washington, and the Gaslamp Killer Experience.
